North Range

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antwerp is the third largest port in the North Range and Europe after Rotterdam and Hamburg.
North Range

Nordrange ( French Range nord-européen , English North range ) is a name for the important continental European ports on the North Sea . About 80% of European imports and exports are handled via the North Range.

The exact composition varies depending on the definition of “important” and “North Sea”. Ports that are always included in the north range are those of Antwerp , Rotterdam , Bremen / Bremerhaven and Hamburg .

Can also be counted to the north range

For example, in the course of containerization, Felixstowe has gained in importance.

The ports supply north-western Europe with goods and goods from overseas; the port of Hamburg also supplies substantial parts of Central and Eastern Europe. They all have container terminals . On the one hand, they are in strong competition with one another, since they are all universal ports and are geographically close to one another; on the other hand, they have certain capacity limits. Depending on the destination of the container and other restrictions (e.g. fixed arrival dates), it may be an alternative for the carrier to move containers to a Mediterranean port or e.g. B. at the port of Odessa ( Black Sea / Ukraine).

Envelope numbers

The ports of the North Range had the following container throughput figures in 2016 (in million TEU ):

  • Rotterdam: 12.39
  • Antwerp: 10.04
  • Hamburg: 8.91
  • Bremen Ports: 5.49
  • Le Havre: 2.52
  • Zeebrugge: 1.40
  • Wilhelmshaven: 0.48
