history

The city of Amsterdam and its port have been closely linked since the 13th century. The first port was at the mouth of the Amstel between Dam and the IJ . The merchants who played a special role in the development of Amsterdam as a port city settled on Damrak and along the Warmoesstraat. In the 16th century, the port on the east side of the old city center was expanded, where the shipyards were also located. Then the islands of Oostelijke and Westelijke Eilanden were created in IJ .

The only connection from Amsterdam to the North Sea was via the Zuiderzee, today's IJsselmeer . As this road silted up more and more, the Noordhollandsch Kanaal to Den Helder was laid out on behalf of King Wilhelm I and opened in 1825. When this canal could no longer accommodate the increasing shipping traffic, the North Sea Canal was built from 1865 to 1876 . It is about 25 kilometers long, has ten side canals and leads to IJmuiden on the North Sea.

The port of Amsterdam was gradually expanded, so the eastern port area and new port basins were created along the North Sea Canal. In 1892 Amsterdam was better connected to the hinterland via the Merwede Canal , in 1952 this canal was extended to Tiel as the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal , creating a direct connection to the Rhine.

As part of the Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan , the western port area was further expanded in the 1950s; the eastern area became less important. Residential areas were built there from 1990 onwards.
