Magdeburg Virgin Guards

The Magdeburg Virgin Guards (also simply Virgin Guards or Guard ) are the American football department of Magdeburger SV 90 Preussen . These will play in the Regionalliga Ost in the 2018 season.

history

Foundation and the first years

The Virgin Guards were founded in 1995, but did not participate in regular game operations until 1996, so that in 1995 only friendly games were played. The Guard lost their first game 0:70 at the Schwerin Vikings. The first home game followed on October 8, 1995 against the Chemnitz Crusaders, but was still played in Irxleben. In the three following years, the championship title in the respective leagues could be won and promotion achieved. In 1999, the Virgin Guards team played their first year in the Regionalliga and finished second behind the Dresden Monarchs and thus reached the playoffs. However, they lost the semi-final game at the Hannover Musketeers 6:13. The revenge for this came in the 2000 season, in which the Musketeers were defeated twice in the regular season and thus won a home game right for the semi-finals. This semi-final game could be won with 24:10 against Wolfsburg Blue Wings and thus secure participation in the finals. Opponents were again the Hanover Musketeers, but just like in the regular season, they could also be beaten in the final, the game ended 16:13 for the Magdeburg Guard and meant promotion for the Virgin Guards to the 2nd Bundesliga North.

First attempts in the 2nd Bundesliga and a new start in the regional league

The bottom line was only three victories for the Virgin Guards in the 2001 season, but this was enough to keep them up. Higher goals were set for the 2002 season, but it was similarly disappointing. This season you could only get two wins, but this was enough to secure the sporting league. However, 11 players ended their active career after the 2002 season, reason enough for the Virgin Guards to forego their right to start the 2nd Bundesliga North in the 2003 season and to play in the regional league.

In the years between 2003 and 2006, only victories over the current GFL teams of the Berlin Rebels and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes were possible, the rest of the seasons they played without any particular ups or downs and always managed to stay in the league. In the 2007 season the Guard was unbeaten in the Regionalliga Nord and played against the champions of the Regionalliga West for promotion to the GFL 2. The home game against the Assindia Cardinals could still be won 14: 7, but in the second leg they lost Virgin Guards at 13:21 in Essen. In total, they missed promotion to GFL 2 with 27:28, i.e. with the smallest possible gap.

Overall, the Regionalliga Ost could be won in the 2008 season with only one given point, which in turn secured the playoff participation. However, five games of the Virgin Guards in retrospect counted as a defeat because they let players play who played for other teams in the same season. Thus they were denied the playoff participation and they started again in the 2009 season in the Regionalliga Ost. Also in the 2009 season the Magdeburg Virgin Guards were champions of the Regionalliga Ost, and were promoted directly to GFL 2 because a sports court revised the game ratings against the Guard from 2008. The reason for this was that the players did not play in Germany, but in France and Denmark, so there was no penalty. Thus promotion was possible without a playoff or qualification game.

The Virgin Guards in GFL 2

The 2010 season was positive for the Magdeburg Guard, they won eight games and lost only six, which meant fourth place at the end of the season. In 2011 they managed to stay in the GFL 2 with 5th place and 7:13 points and left the Cologne Falcons team behind. But five players from the Magdeburg Guard switched to the Berlin Rebels for the 2012 season, and a few more ended their active careers as athletes. The head of the Virgin Guards department drew the conclusion from this not to apply for a license for the GFL 2 for the 2012 season, instead the new players and the young players in the regional league should be brought up to the level.

Virgin Guards as of 2012

In the 2012 season, the team started in the Regionalliga Ost and was able to occupy 4th place with six wins and six defeats and moved far away from the relegation region. The 2013 season was also a successful one for the Magdeburg Guard. At the end of the season there were 6 wins and only 4 defeats. In addition, the Magdeburgs were the only team to succeed in defeating the regional league champions, the Tollense Sharks, with a 35:12 win in front of their home crowd.

Venue

The Virgin Guards play their home games in the regional league in the Heinrich-Germer-Stadion in Magdeburg. When the team was still playing in GFL 2, they switched to the much larger MDCC arena several times .
