The Heinrich-Germer-Stadion is a football stadium with a cinder track in Magdeburg 's Sudenburg district . It is currently used by the soccer teams of the Magdeburg FFC , the Prussian Magdeburg , the 2nd team and the A-youth of the 1. FC Magdeburg , as well as the American football team of the Magdeburg Virgin Guards .

history

The stadium was built in 1920 and called "Stadion am Königsweg". From the summer of 1951 to August 1952, the remaining war rubble was removed as part of a renovation, new stands were built and a new lawn was sown. The stadium was then reopened on August 20, 1952 with a friendly against Motor Zwickau in front of 20,000 visitors . The facility was named after the Magdeburg politician and educator Heinrich Germer , who initiated the renovation of the stadium and who died in June 1952.

After the Second World War until the mid-1960s, the soccer teams of the forerunners of 1. FC Magdeburg, BSG Stahl Magdeburg, Motor Mitte Magdeburg and SC Aufbau Magdeburg played in the Heinrich-Germer-Stadion. On March 22, 1955, the audience record of 22,000 spectators was set up in the league game of the second-rate GDR league Motor Mitte Magdeburg against Lok Stendal (2: 1). The record was later set several times. From 1953 to 1991, Heinz Brauer groundskeeper of the stadium.

Due to construction work in the Ernst-Grube-Stadion, which was then used by 1. FC Magdeburg between May 1979 and May 1981, the GDR upper division played again in the Heinrich-Germer-Stadion. The stadium has an oval shape, the main stand is surmounted by a speaker tower. The current capacity is 4,990 spectators, only 15 seats and 100 standing places are covered. The natural grass field of the stadium is surrounded by a 400 m cinder track for athletics events.
