The Holzgerlingen Twister are an American football team from Holzgerlingen in Baden-Württemberg and have been playing in the Regionalliga (American Football) Southwest since 2017 . The Twisters are integrated as a department in SpVgg Holzgerlingen.
history
The team was founded in 1997 through the merger of the Sindelfingen Gators and the Holzgerlingen Saints. The Holzgerlingen Saints had existed since 1989. The Sindelfingen Gators were founded in 1991 by former Saints players. This created an enormous rivalry between the two clubs in the following years. The Gators had to stop playing in the current season in 1997 and merged with the Saints in the same year to ensure the continued existence of the sport in the area.
In 1998 the players of the merged clubs won the unbeaten title of the Baden-Württemberg Association League. After that, the Twister couldn't really develop further in terms of sport for years. Only with the establishment of a youth team in 2001 and the positive results of youth work was the foundation laid for a successful perspective for the club. In 2007, Jemil Hamiko switched from youth to men as head coach and restructured the first team in cooperation with the board.
At the end of the 2011 season, Jemil Hamiko resigned from the post of head coach to coach the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. For the 2012 season, Mario Campos Neves and a seven-person coaching team were hired as head coach.
With the Flag Youth, which was founded in 2004, American football is now also playable for the little ones. Flag football is the ideal introduction to American football and is therefore an important basis for building up young people. Therefore, a second youth team could be built up quickly afterwards.
In 2011, work was carried out on building a women's team that has been participating in the second women's Bundesliga south since the 2012 season.
At the beginning of the 2013 season, a C-Tackle youth team (10-14 years old) was founded, which won the Baden-Württemberg runner-up title when it entered the league for the first time.
In 2019 the team's 30th anniversary was celebrated.
Teams
1st team
In 2008 they remained unbeaten in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg and rose as champions in the Regionalliga Mitte. In the same year, by winning the Goldtown Bowl again, the team was able to repeat the success of the previous year and successfully defend the title.
In the 2009 season, the first team of the Twister was promoted to runner-up in the Regionalliga Mitte right away and was able to qualify together with the Hanau Hornets for the relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga (German Football League 2).
In the relegation they met the champions of the Regionalliga Süd, the Kirchdorf Wildcats , who had a perfect season in their league and were considered the clear favorite for the playoffs. The Twister defeated the Wildcats in the first leg in front of a home crowd with 33:13. In the second leg in Kirchdorf, the Twisters were defeated by 31:20, but were able to claim promotion due to the better point difference.
In 2010 the Twisters were able to achieve 6th place out of 8 participating teams in the 2nd Bundesliga ( German Football League 2 ). The league was done, but the pride of Schönbuch strived for more.
In the 2011 season the Twister reached the 3rd place of the 8 teams in the GFL 2 South.
In 2012, the team was unable to match the previous year's performance and was relegated.
In the 2013 season, the second place in the regional league was won and the relegation against the Ingolstadt Dukes was won. So the team was able to get promoted back to GFL 2.
In 2014–2015, the 5th and 6th place was achieved in GFL 2 South.
The 2nd place was achieved by the 1st team in the regional league noon in the 2016 season with 3 points behind the Albershausen Crusaders. Although this would have allowed participation in the playoffs, the then head coach Kevin Selje decided to spend another year in the regional league.
In the 2017 and 2018 seasons, the 1st team will play in the Regionalliga Südwest, which was founded in 2017.
The hurricanes are preparing for the 2019 season with old friends in the coaching crew.
2nd team
Due to the relatively high influx of new players, it was decided at the end of 2008 to take part in the 2009 game with a second team in the Baden-Württemberg regional league. The 2nd team should primarily serve as an introduction for beginners and players coming from the youth in order to introduce them to the sport or to the level in the men's area.
The team remained without a win in its first year of existence. If possible, the association would like to provide a second team again in order to continue the positive developments and feedback on the existence of a development team. A final decision has not yet been made. In 2009, only five football clubs nationwide provided a second team, all of them from the north group of the GFL or GFL 2 .
Juniors
The A-youth (15-19 years) played in the youth performance league Baden-Württemberg in 2009 and was able to reach 3rd place as a newcomer. Only the Bundesliga youngsters from Weinheim and Saarbrücken were able to place in front of the Twister Juniors. The greatest success in the still young history of the Twister offspring was the 2004 national championship with a perfect season.
In order to give the older Flag youth players and the younger A youth players more playing time, the Twister also provide a B youth team (13-16 years of age). In order to avoid overlaps in the youths' schedules, the B-youths play in autumn. With a third and second place in 2005 and 2006 respectively, the cyclones can already boast nationwide successes in this age group. In 2009 and 2010 she was Vice Baden Württemberg Champion. In 2011 this team became undefeated champions in the Baden Württemberg U16 league and were able to defend their title in 2012.
In the 2011 season, the A-Jugend remained undefeated and thus made it to the GFL Juniors League. In the following years the youth was able to hold this class and took 3rd place in the 2013 season.
Before the 2013 season, a C-youth (10-14 years) was founded, which was able to achieve the runner-up title in Baden-Württemberg in its first year.
In the 2015 season, the A-youth of the Twister reached the playoffs and lost in the quarter-finals against the Saarland Hurricanes.
In the following season of 2016, the A-youth was unexpectedly able to reach the playoffs again, this time in Berlin against the Berlin Adler, but they lost again in the first play-off game.
2017 and 2018 were a very successful year with 1st and 2nd place. Therefore, in 2019, after a two-year "break", it was decided to return to the GFLJ.
Flaggies
The flag youth of the Twister (9-14 years) also finished the 2009 season with 3rd place. The Flag Youth achieved their first major success in 2007 when they won the Baden-Württemberg Championship and thus participated in the German Championship in Berlin. In Berlin they took 8th place.
In 2010, the Holzgerlingen Twister Flaggies won the German vice-championship title in Kiel.
In 2011 the flag youth reached the Baden-Württemberg runner-up championship.
In 2013, the Baden-Württemberg championship title was won.
2013 When taking part in the German championship in Hildesheim, the German championship title was won.
2017 again winner of the Baden-Württemberg indoor and outdoor flag football championship.
2018 is still running.
