The Bielefeld Bulldogs (officially: 1. American Football Club Bielefeld Bulldogs eV ) are an American football club from Bielefeld . The club was founded on June 17, 1986 by 16 men as a pure American football club. In later years the cheerleading and basketball departments were added. The first men's football team played in the 2004 season and from 2012 to 2016 in the second-rate German Football League 2 (GFL 2). The home venue is the Rußheide stadium . The Bielefeld Bulldogs have over 500 members.

history

The Bulldogs football team initially played at the Bielefeld cycling track . In 2003 the Bulldogs became champions of the Regionalliga West. Since only five teams played in the GFL2 Nord in the season, the Bielefeld team were automatically promoted. With just one win, a 23: 7 at the Assindia Cardinals , the Bulldogs promptly relegated from bottom of the table . It was not until 2012 that it was able to rise again. Initially, the Bielefeld team remained unbeaten in the entire regional league season. In the promotion relegation, the Bulldogs first beat the Rostock Griffins 29:28 and then the Lübeck Seals 32: 0.

In the 2013 GFL2 season, too , the sporting heights of Bielefeld continued. With 13 wins and only one defeat, the Bulldogs under Head Coach Dale Hefron became champions of the GFL2 Nord early and met the Cologne Falcons in their relegation to the German Football League . The Falcons won the first leg in Cologne with 42:30. The second leg was dramatic. In front of 3,000 spectators, the Bulldogs were leading with 17: 3 points 39 seconds before the end and would have been promoted. But then the Cologne team managed a field goal , so that the Bielefeld team was only one point short of promotion.

In the following years, the successful team fell apart, so that the Bielefeld team was relegated as the penultimate in the 2015 season . Since the master Hildesheim Invaders rose to the GFL and no team was relegated from there, a place was available in the second highest division. In addition to the Bielefeld team, the Rostock Griffins also applied for this. The Bulldogs were chosen because, according to the American Football Association Germany, they have a competitive team. But already in the following season of 2016 , the Bielefeld were relegated penultimate to the regional league.
