The watchmaker was (born Antoni Norbert Patek) on 1 May 1839 by the Polish nobleman Antoine Norbert de Patek (born Franciszek Czapek) and François Czapek, in Geneva watchmaker Patek, Czapek & Co. founded. The cooperation between Patek and Czapek ended in 1845, Czapek then founded his company Czapek & Co., which existed until 1869 .

In 1845 Antoine de Patek and Jean Adrien Philippe founded the company Patek & Co. with Vincent Gostkowski and renamed it Patek Philippe & Co. in 1851 , from which in 1901 the Ancienne Manufacture d 'Horlogerie Patek Philippe & Co. SA was born.

Patek Philippe is considered to be the inventor of the winding crown . This mechanism fundamentally changed the way clocks were used at the time, and since then one no longer needed an extra key to wind the clockwork or set the time.

As a result of the Great Depression of 1929, entrepreneurs Charles and Jean Stern acquired the majority of the Patek Philippe SA company. The Stern family has been the sole owner of the watch manufacturer Patek Philippe SA since 1932. In the same year, the classic wristwatch with reference 96 was introduced. It has been produced almost unchanged to this day. In 1933, under the direction of Jean Pfister, the company began manufacturing its own raw works. Only the size of the case has been adapted to current tastes. In 1953, Patek Philippe launched the manufacture's first wristwatch with an automatic rotor winding system. The manufactory has always made complicated wrist and pocket watches with so-called complications . In 1955, Patek Philippe introduced the Gyromax, a fine-tuning device for the balance.

In addition to the complicated watches, Patek Philippe has also manufactured one of the thinnest automatic caliber 240 with a height of just 2.40 mm since 1977. In this respect, Patek is only surpassed by Jean Lassale from Bouchet-Lassale SA (caliber 2000: 2.08 mm), whose patents were taken over by Nouvelle Lémania SA in 1982 and whose movements are used in watches from Piaget and Vacheron Constantin (as caliber VC1170) were. The trademark of Patek Philippe is the Calatrava cross, which is depicted on the winding crown. The 175th anniversary, the watch was Grandmaster Chime brought out a Grande Complication with acoustic display of date by the percussion and a wake-up function per minute repeater . Production in the Geneva suburb of Plan-les-Ouates is 55,000 watches per year. The estimated annual turnover is around CHF 1 billion. In 1989, Patek Philippe presented the world's most complicated pocket watch, the Caliber 89 with 33 complications and 1,366 individual parts, to mark its 150th anniversary .

Extremely rare and highly monetary specimens are always personally inspected or inspected by the current President of Patek Philippe. Thierry Stern has been responsible for Patek Philippe since 2009. Thierry Stern is now the fourth generation to run the family company from Geneva.

For decades, the watch manufacturer's slogan has been :

“Un Patek Philippe ne vous appartient jamais seul. Vous l'appréciez toute une vie, mais vous le conservez pour la prochaine génération "(German:" A Patek Philippe never belongs to you all alone. You enjoy it for a lifetime, but actually you keep it for the next generation ") ).
