The AFV Jenaer Hanfrieds are an East German American football club. The name of the association is derived from the nickname of the founder of Jena University, Johann Friedrich I. Hanfried , who adorns the market square of Jena in the form of a statue . He holds a sword in his right hand and a book in his left hand. The sword symbolizes the fighting and the book the religion. In an older logo of the Jena Hanfrieds, the book was exchanged for a football .

history

In January 1993 the Jenaer Hanfrieds was founded. 1993 was not a league operation, but a training year. 1994 was the start in the Aufbauliga-Ost and entry into the regional league. For economic and territorial reasons, a move to the Bayern League was considered in 1995. This was successfully prevented by the East German Football Association. In 1995 the cheerleading department was founded.

After winning an American coach, games were played in the national league for the first time in 1996, and the desired top place in the table could not be achieved. In 1997 there was no league operation because financial support was canceled at short notice. In 1998 three American coaches were signed, the season ended with 4 defeats, 4 wins and 170: 152 points.

In 1999 the East German regional and upper leagues were merged. The Jenaer Hanfrieds stayed the whole season without a win in the new league; only the cheerleaders achieved 4th place at the East German championships. After the decision of the East German Football Association, the Jenaer Hanfrieds and 7 other clubs were awarded to western associations in 2000 and thus had the decision to continue playing in their old leagues or to switch to the same league class of the new association. The board of directors of the Jenaer Hanfrieds decided in favor of the Hessian association under the leadership of Robert Huber, who was also the first chairman of the all-German umbrella organization AFVD . This change turned out to be positive, because the Hanfrieds ended the season with a 4th place, 6 wins, 5 defeats and a draw and 183: 148 points.

The most successful season to date was 2001. With the support of an American coach and three American players, the Hanfrieds moved into the play-offs and became runner-up in the Oberliga Hessen / Thuringia / Saarland / Rhineland-Palatinate. The cheerleaders took first place at the Hessian championships and thus qualified for the first time for the German championships.

In 2002 the Hanfrieds had a good season. After ten games they were the undefeated champions of the league and rose to the middle of the regional league. The season score of 417: 61 is also worth mentioning. In 2003 the aim of the Jena team was to stay up and develop the team in terms of sport. The American Ryan Dean Ruschhaupt was hired as the new head coach. The goal of staying in the league was not achieved.

Under the new coach Simon Schwinger, the team achieved a season in 2004 with only two defeats and second place in the table, which was enough for promotion to the regional league. The cheerleaders are competing for the first time in all three age categories for the Thuringian-Hessian state championship. All three teams achieved the state championship title.

The Jena Hanfrieds achieved first place in the table in 2005 in the regional league center ahead of the Obertshausen Blizzards and secured participation in the relegation games for the 2. Bundesliga south. Here they met the Rosenheim Rebels , against whom they won a game and lost one. The home team always won. In the end, the points ratio spoke for the Hanfrieds and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga South.

The pre-season game as part of the Charity Bowl against the first division club Hamburg Blue Devils , which ended in a 48:00 win for Hamburg, was followed by a tough 2006 season for the Jena Hanfrieds. Without a single win they ended this season and relegated back to the regional league center. In 2007 the name was changed to Injoy Hanfrieds Jena . In the 2007 season they reached fifth place in the Middle Regional League, followed by fourth place in 2008. In 2007, a baseball department was founded in the club, which in the same year was included in the Central German Baseball and Softball Association (MBSV) and since 2009 participates in gaming operations. In 2010 she was runner-up in the national league.
