Carleton College is an independent, confessional free liberal arts college with students of both sexes in Northfield , in the US state of Minnesota . The college was founded on November 14, 1866 by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches under the name Northfield College . In 1871 the name was changed to honor the patron William Carleton of Charlestown, Massachusetts , who donated US $ 50,000 to the newly formed institution. Today the college has approximately 2,000 students and employs 198 teachers. The current president is Steven G. Poskanzer.
