Warren P. Knowles
Warren Perley Knowles (born August 19, 1908 in River Falls , Wisconsin , † May 1, 1993 in Black River Falls , Wisconsin) was an American politician and from 1965 to 1971 the 37th governor of the state of Wisconsin.
Early years and political advancement
Knowles attended Carleton College in Northfield ( Minnesota ) until 1930 and then until 1933 the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he studied law. In 1940 he was elected to the Wisconsin Senate. He kept this mandate during the Second World War , although he was serving as a naval officer during this time. He stayed in the State Senate until 1953. He was then elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin in 1954. He held this office between 1955 and 1959 and then again from 1961 to 1963. In 1957, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . In the primary of the Republicans , he finished only fourth.
Governor of wisconsin
In 1964, against a national trend in favor of the Democrats , Knowles was elected the new governor of his state. After two re-elections in 1966 and 1968, he was able to exercise this office between January 5, 1965 and January 4, 1971. Those years were overshadowed by the Vietnam War . As in other states, there were violent protests by citizens against this war. The civil rights movement also attracted attention through demonstrations. The governor responded to the protests with the temporary deployment of the National Guard . After his governorship ended, Knowles became president of Heritage Wisconsin Corporation , a Milwaukee- based banking group.
In 1981, the St. Croix River State Forest was renamed Governor Knowles State Forest in honor of Warren Knowles .
