Jesse Stone (politician)

Jesse Stone (born August 23, 1836 in Lincoln , England , †  May 11, 1902 in Watertown , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1899 and 1902 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Wisconsin.

Career

In 1841, Jesse Stone and his parents came from his home in England to Waterford, New York State , where he attended public schools. He later moved to Watertown, Wisconsin. There he worked for Woodard & Stone Bakery . Apparently, he must have made a certain fortune, because he acquired shares in various other companies.

Politically, Stone joined the Republican Party . In 1888 and 1892 he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Conventions , at each of which Benjamin Harrison was nominated as a presidential candidate. He was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1880 and 1882 . In 1898 he became the new lieutenant governor of Wisconsin on the side of Edward Scofield . He held this office after a re-election between 1899 and his death on May 11, 1902. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . From 1901 he served under the new governor Robert M. La Follette .
