Timothy Burns
Timothy Burns (born May 31, 1820 in Dublin , Ireland , † September 21, 1853 in La Crosse , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . In 1852 and 1853 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Wisconsin.
Career
As a child, Timothy Burns came with his parents from his Irish homeland to the United States, where the family initially settled in New York State . In 1837 he moved to the Wisconsin Territory . In local Iowa County he worked in the lead mining industry. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1844 he became sheriff in Iowa County. In 1847 and 1848 he sat in the territorial House of Representatives. After Wisconsin joined the Union, he was also a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1849 . From 1850 Burns lived in La Crosse, where he worked as a member of the State Board of Public Works in the public sector. He also held several local offices. Among other things, he worked as a district judge, which suggests that he had previously studied law. He was also involved in the railroad business.
In 1851, Burns was elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin alongside Leonard J. Farwell . He held this office between 1852 and his death in 1853. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . While visiting relatives, he fell ill with biliary fever. His health improved and he started the journey home. Soon afterwards he suffered a relapse, from which he died on September 21, 1853 in La Crosse. His office as lieutenant governor remained vacant until the inauguration of James T. Lewis, who was regularly elected in 1853 .
