Barbara Lawton (born July 5, 1951 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2011, she was Lieutenant Governor of the state of Wisconsin.

Lawton studied Spanish at Lawrence University , where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987 , and then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison . There she received her Master of Arts in 1991 , she was elected as a Democrat to the 43rd Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin and took over the office on January 3, 2003. In 2006 she was re-elected. Lawton was the second woman to hold this office and the first woman to be elected to that office. Her predecessor Margaret Farrow was named lieutenant governor when Scott McCallum rose to the post of governor.

In the run-up to the 2010 gubernatorial elections , she announced her candidacy for the successor of the no longer running Jim Doyle in August 2009 . In October of the same year she withdrew her candidacy for personal reasons. The Democrats then nominated Tom Barrett , who was defeated by Republican Scott Walker . The office of vice governor took over again a woman with Rebecca Kleefisch .

Lawton is married with two children, a son and a daughter.
