James M. Bingham

James Monroe Bingham (born February 3, 1828 in Perry , Wyoming County , New York , †  January 8, 1885 in Chippewa Falls , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1878 and 1882 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Wisconsin.

Career

James Bingham attended public schools in his home country. He then worked as a teacher in New York for a few years. At the end of this activity, he served as Principal the Perry Center Academy and Leroy High School . In 1853 he moved west. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1856, he began to work in this profession in Palmyra, Wisconsin. In 1871 he moved to Chippewa Falls, where he also practiced as a lawyer. During the Civil War in 1864 he was a major in a Wisconsin regiment whose service was limited to 100 days. He was also a Freemason .

He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1863 and 1874 he sat several times in the Wisconsin State Assembly . He was a member and at times also chairman of the judicial committee. In 1870 he was President of the Chamber as Speaker . In 1877, Bingham was elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin on the side of William E. Smith . He held this office after re-election between 1878 and 1882. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . James Bingham died in Chippewa Falls on January 8, 1885.
