Philleo Nash (born October 25, 1909 in Wisconsin Rapids , Wisconsin , †  October 12, 1987 in Marshfield , Wisconsin) was an American politician and anthropologist . Between 1959 and 1961 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Wisconsin.

Career

In 1932 Philleo Nash graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison . He then studied anthropology at the University of Chicago until 1937 . Between 1937 and 1941 he lectured in this subject at the University of Toronto . He then continued this activity until 1942 at the University of Wisconsin. At the same time he became the manager of the family-owned Biron Cranberry Company , of which he was president between 1946 and 1977.

Politically, Nash joined the Democratic Party , whose state chairmanship he held from 1955 to 1957. Since 1942 he worked for various federal agencies in Washington, DC . In 1943 he was one of the advisors to the War Department . From 1942 to 1946 he served as Special Assistant to the Director, White House Liaison, Office of War Information , for a presidential agency. He served under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman . Between 1946 and 1953 he was a member of President Truman's advisory staff. His specialty were minority problems such as racial integration in the armed forces.

In 1958, Nash was elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin alongside Gaylord Nelson . He held this office between 1959 and 1961. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . In 1961 he worked for the US Department of the Interior for a short time as Assistant to Secretary, Public Land Management . From 1961 to 1966 he was federal commissioner for Indian affairs. He was then a consulting anthropologist from 1966 to 1987. Between 1971 and 1973 he was also a professor at American University . He died in Marshfield on October 12, 1987.
