William D. Connor

William Duncan Connor (born March 24, 1864 in Stratford , Ontario , Canada , †  November 20, 1944 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1907 and 1909 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Wisconsin .

Career

In 1872, William Connor and his parents came to Wisconsin from their Canadian homeland, where the family settled on a farm in Wood County . He attended the public schools in his new home and the State Normal School in Oshkosh . From 1895 he lived in Marshfield , where he worked successfully as an entrepreneur in the wood industry. In the process, he founded several cities in Wisconsin and Michigan that emerged from his company's work camps. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He served on the Wood County County Council for 20 years. He was chairman of this body twice. Between 1892 and 1904 he was a multiple delegate to regional Republican party conventions for Wisconsin. In 1904 he was also designated as a delegate to the Republican National Convention . For reasons within the party, at that time he belonged to an undesirable minority within the party, he was not allowed there. Regardless, he was Republican chairman of state for Wisconsin between 1904 and 1908.

In 1906, Connor was elected Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin alongside James O. Davidson . He held this office between 1907 and 1909. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his time as lieutenant governor, he withdrew from state politics and continued his business career. He was also the curator of several schools. William Connor died in Phoenix on November 20, 1944. He was the grandfather of Melvin R. Laird who was, among other things, Secretary of Defense of the United States .
