Early years and political advancement

Schreiber attended the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and Valparaiso University . He then studied law at the Law School of Marquette University . He graduated there in 1964. As a member of the Democratic Party , Schreiber sat in the Wisconsin Senate from 1963 to 1971 . In 1970 he was on the side of Patrick J. Lucey for lieutenant governor elected by Wisconsin. In 1974 both were confirmed in office.

Governor of wisconsin

When Governor Lucey gave up his office as governor because of his appointment as US ambassador to Mexico in July 1977, Schreiber had to end the remaining term of office as his deputy. He served as governor between July 7, 1977 and January 1, 1979. Schreiber campaigned for a better school policy. In addition, he took care of the interests of children and young people, consumer protection and the rights of workers and the elderly. Schreiber's years in office suffered from a generally poor economic situation and high inflation. In order to meet the state budget, the governor had to raise some taxes, which some fellow citizens resented him. That was one of the reasons for his defeat in the 1978 gubernatorial election, in which he ran for a full term as governor. He only got 44.9 percent of the vote and was defeated by Republican Lee S. Dreyfus .

Further career

In 1982, Schreiber ran again for the post of governor. This time he got stuck in his party's primaries, which Tony Earl won. After that he worked temporarily as a lawyer. In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully against John Norquist for election as Mayor of Milwaukee . In the same year he founded his own consultancy, which has good relations with all political forces in Wisconsin; including State and Wisconsin Congressmen. Martin Schreiber is married to Elaine Thaney. They have four children together.
