John Catlin

John Catlin (born October 13, 1803 in Orwell , Vermont , †  August 4, 1874 in Elizabeth , New Jersey ) was an American politician . In 1848 and 1849 he was acting governor of the Wisconsin Territory .

Career

John Catlin attended a school in Shoreham and then worked as a teacher for nine years. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1833, he began to work in this profession. In 1836 he moved to Mineral Point , Wisconsin Territory. There he was also involved in founding a bank. He later moved to Madison , where he was a postman. He was also employed by both the Territory's House of Representatives and the Local Court of Justice. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1846 he was named Secretary of the Wisconsin Territory by US President James K. Polk . When the state of Wisconsin was founded in May 1848, not all of the former territory was incorporated into the new state. The remainder of the territory remained independent as Wisconsin Territory until March 3, 1849. During this time Catlin was appointed acting territorial governor. Then the area was added to the new Minnesota Territory .

John Catlin later moved to Milwaukee . He was a district attorney and then a judge in Dane County . He was also involved in the railroad business. He became president of the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad . He was also one of the founders of the Wisconsin Historical Society . He later moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he spent his retirement. He died there on August 4, 1874.
