Muriel Elizabeth Bowser (born August 2, 1972 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician . She has been the mayor of the federal capital Washington, DC since 2015

Career

Muriel Bowser graduated from Elizabeth Seton High School in Maryland and then studied history at Chatham College in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . She finished her education with a political degree from American University . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . In 2004, she was elected to the Washington, DC City Advisory Neighborhood Commission . This body, which is located below the city ​​council , takes care of issues relating to infrastructure, security and finances for the respective city district in the individual districts. Bowser stayed there until 2007. Between 2007 and 2015, she sat on the City Council of the federal capital ( Council of the District of Columbia ).

In 2014, Bowser was elected new Mayor of Washington, DC with 54 percent of the vote. On January 2, 2015, she succeeded Vincent C. Gray , against whom she had prevailed in the Democratic Primary , in this role.

Political position
