Anthony Allen "Tony" Williams (born July 28, 1951 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2007 he was Mayor of the federal capital Washington, DC

Career

Anthony Williams graduated from Loyola High School in Los Angeles and then studied at Yale College . After completing a law degree at Harvard University , he was admitted to the bar. He also studied political science at the Harvard Kennedy School, which is part of the same university . In the meantime he served in the United States Air Force .

Politically, Williams joined the Democratic Party . He was politically active in various states in the United States. So he held the post of Deputy State Comptroller of Connecticut and worked for municipal authorities in St. Louis ( Missouri ) and in Boston ( Massachusetts ). In New Haven , he was also a member of the city council and its incumbent president. During the first phase of Bill Clinton's presidency , he served as CFO for the United States Department of Agriculture .

In 1995, Williams became treasurer of the federal capital Washington, where he succeeded in stabilizing the city's financial position. In the meantime, he successfully messed with Mayor Marion Barry . Williams was so popular in his office that he was elected Barry's successor in 1998. He held this office after being re-elected between 1999 and 2007. As mayor, he continued the budget consolidation that he had already started as the city's financial administrator. He also managed to reduce the crime rate and the long-standing trend of the city's population decline was halted. In 2006 he renounced another candidacy. After serving as mayor, Williams worked for an investment firm until 2009, which he chaired. Since then he has worked for the law firm Arent Fox . He has also been a board member of the Bank of Georgetown since 2012 .
