Vincent Condol Gray (born November 8, 1942 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician . From January 2011 to January 2015 he was mayor of his hometown Washington, DC, the seat of government of the United States. He belongs to the Democratic Party .

Life

Gray attended Dunbar High School in Washington. After graduating from high school , he studied psychology at George Washington University , which is also in his hometown; he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in his field of study.

In the course of his political career, he was mainly active in the social field: He started his political career at the DC Association for Retarded Citizens , an association that campaigns for disabled citizens. There he supported the mentally handicapped with an innovative public program. In 1991 him the then mayor called Sharon Pratt Kelly to the post of director of the DC Department of Human Services (Director of the Social Welfare Office of the District of Columbia ). From 1994 to 2004 he was director general of Covenant House Washington , an organization that cares for homeless youth.

On the District of Columbia City Council

On January 2, 2005, he was sworn in as a city councilor after he had won the primary election in September 2004 against the incumbent member from the 7th constituency, Kevin P. Chavous, and in the election in November of the same year had won 91 percent of the vote . During his tenure as a councilor, he served on the health, education, social, economic development, libraries and recreation committees. City council chairwoman Linda W. Cropp also appointed him chairman of a special committee on preventing youth violence. In 2006, Gray himself became chairman of the city council, after then chairwoman Linda W. Cropp had decided not to run for any further term as chairman as she was seeking mayor's office.

Mayor of Washington

Gray campaigned on March 30, 2010. For his campaign he used a slogan that he had already used while he was chairman of the city council: One City. Leadership We Need . He won the election for mayor with 54 percent of the vote, his strongest rival Adrian Fenty came with 44 percent. During his tenure, he initiated, among other things, that employees of the city are given four days of unpaid leave in order to save 19 million euros. Document is missing! In 2013, during a debate over racist football team names, he said the Redskins would not be allowed to play in his city again until they renamed themselves.

Muriel Bowser succeeded him on January 2, 2015 .

Private

Gray has two children, Jonice Gray Tucker and Vincent Carlos Gray, and two grandchildren, Austin Gray Tucker and Jillian Gray Tucker. Gray's wife Loretta died in July 1998. Vincent Gray lives in the Washington neighborhood of Hillcrest and is a Roman Catholic .
