history

Known as the Hotel Aladdin, the owners chose to create a performing arts center to replace an underutilized golf course. Planning started in 1969. In 1972 the hotel was sold to Sam Diamond, Peter Wevve, Sorkis Wevve and Richard Daly. PH Live opened in 1976 with a concert by Neil Diamond . During the 1970s and 1980s, the auditorium became one of the most important stages on the Las Vegas Strip for many rock 'n' roll artists . During the hotel's financial troubles in the 1990s, the PH Live was its main source of income. In 1998 the theater closed while the original Aladdin Hotel was blown up. After a renovation, the PH Live was reopened in 2000 with a concert by Enrique Iglesias . Capacity dropped from 7,500 to 7,000. With the opening of the MGM Grand Garden Arena and Mandalay Bay Events Center , the venue was rarely used for music events. Since 2010 the theater has been used more frequently for concerts, with at least 15 concerts being held annually.

The theater was the venue for Miss Universe 1991 and 1996, several Miss USA and Miss America competitions. On December 19, 2012, the Miss Universe 2012 competition took place here.

On June 28, 2012, the auditorium was renamed "PH Live at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino". The theater will host a Britney Spears two-year residency show starting in late 2013.
