history

The Miss USA was first elected 1,952th The year before, the newly crowned Miss America , Yolande Betbeze , had refused to pose for photos in a bathing suit. The swimwear manufacturer Catalina, one of the sponsors of the event, left the group of sponsors and launched a competitive event, the Miss USA election . He also justified the choice for Miss Universe , in which the most beautiful woman in the world is to be chosen.

The event peaked in popularity in the 1960s. Since then, like all beauty competitions, it has lost considerable public appeal. She is also under constant fire from feminist critics. The organizers counter the accusation of presenting a degrading meat inspection by pointing out that the choice would not only be based on beauty, but also on personal and intellectual advantages.

In 1957 the winner Leona Gage (the former Miss Maryland ) was stripped of the title because it came to light that she was a minor, married for the second time and was already a mother. The title went to runner-up Charlotte Sheffield from Utah.

With 8 misses , the state of Texas has so far had the most winners, followed by California (5), Hawaii and Illinois (4 each). In 1967, 1980, 1995 and 1997 there were two winners due to a stalemate in the number of votes.

organization

Unlike the Miss America elections, which took place annually in Atlantic City until 2005 , the coronation location of the Miss USA changes annually. Participants are the winners of state-level competitions. Since the mid-1980s these have been named Miss (State) USA ( e.g. Miss Delaware USA ) in order to avoid confusion with the previously identical titles of the Miss America preliminary rounds (i.e. Miss Delaware ). While the winners of Miss America qualify for the Miss World election , the incumbent Miss USA takes part in the Miss Universe election.

The organization and marketing company Miss Universe Organization is a joint venture between Donald Trump and the television broadcaster NBC . She is also responsible for hosting Miss Universe and Miss Teen USA . She is also committed to fighting and preventing breast cancer . This issue has been a prominent theme for years - including in the election itself.
