Carol Ann Laverne Morris (born April 8, 1936 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American model and actress . In 1956 she won the Miss USA and Miss Universe elections .

Life

Carol Morris was born in Omaha, the only child of clergyman LaVerne Morris and his wife. Her family was of Irish descent. Morris moved with her parents to Scott City , where she also went to school and her father worked at the Davis Street Christian Church. After moving to Ottumwa again , Morris attended Ottumwa High School and graduated from there. She then went to Drake University in Des Moines , where she became a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta student community.

Morris won her first beauty pageant in high school as Miss Ottumwa. During her time at Drake University, she won the Miss Iowa title in 1954 and took part in the Miss America election as the state representative . However, the title went to Lee Meriwether . In 1956, Morris won the Miss USA election in Long Beach . She then took part in the Miss Universe election, also taking place in Long Beach, which she also won.

During her time as Miss Universe, Morris met with former US Presidents Harry S. Truman and Herbert Hoover, among others . She also appeared as a troop entertainer with Bob Hope . On her return to her hometown of Ottumwa, Morris was honored with a parade and a visit from Iowa's Governor Leo Hoegh . She also appeared as a guest on the television shows What's My Line? and To Tell the Truth .

After her time as Miss Universe, Carol Morris began a brief career as an actress. She got her first role in Crazy Love at the side of Jeff Chandler . It was followed by a dozen other appearances in films and television series before Morris retired in 1963.

In 1959, Morris married the oil tycoon Edward Burke, with whom they had three children. After Burke's death, she remarried and had another child. In the following years, Carol Morris served occasionally as a judge in the Miss Iowa election. Today she lives secluded in Houston .
