Jeff Chandler
Jeff Chandler (born December 15, 1918 in Brooklyn , New York , † June 17, 1961 in Los Angeles , California ) was a popular American film actor in the 1950s.
Life
Born as Ira Grossel, Chandler attended Erasmus Hall High School , a starting point for many stage and film careers. He then took acting classes and worked in acting troops for two years before doing his military service in World War II . After his departure he was first heard on the radio in serious and cheerful speaking roles. He got his first role in film in 1947 in Johnny O'Clock .
In the 1950s, the 1.91-meter tall Chandler became a star in western and action films. He had his first starring role as an Israeli freedom fighters in Sword in the Desert (dt. Sword in the desert ), 1948. It was followed by an Oscar nomination for the role as Cochise in The Broken Arrow , 1950 as the first of three appearances as legendary Apache - Chief, followed by The Battle of the Apache Pass , 1952 and Taza, Son of Cochise (Eng. Taza, the son of Cochise ), 1954.
As the decade progressed, Chandler became a man in great demand. His sex appeal, increased by prematurely graying hair and sun-tanned appearance, led to participation in many action and costume films. Some stations this time were Away All Boats , Toy Tiger , Drango , The Tattered Dress , Man in the Shadow , Golden Fire , A stranger in my arms and thunder in the sun . His female counterparts were for example June Allyson , Joan Crawford , Rhonda Fleming , Susan Hayward , Maureen O'Hara , Jane Russell and Esther Williams .
Shortly after filming Breakthrough On Command , Chandler died of blood poisoning at the age of 42 as a result of a herniated disc surgery . His grave is in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City , California. Jeff Chandler was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
