action

The young Hannah Haynes lives with her older brother Chuck, her younger sister and her parents in poor conditions in a cheap tenement in the East Side slum area of New York City .

The father would like to move into a house in Astoria on the other side of the East River to get his family out of the ghetto . After a long search he found a job, but was hit by a truck and was unable to take up the position due to the serious injury.

The half- strength Irv from the neighborhood regularly flirts with Hannah, much to the displeasure of her friend, Joe the car washer. This leads to violent arguments between the young people. For her part, the unscrupulous Vera is in love with Irv, who does not reciprocate your longings.

Coincidentally, Vera overhears a conversation between Hannah's brother and his girlfriend Georgie, who have noticed that the old beggar Minosa is only pretending to be blind and has hoarded plenty of money in his house. Chuck and Georgie plan to rob the old man. To gain his affection, Vera tells Irv about it and persuades him to break into Minosa. When they arrive at the old man's shack, Minosa takes them by surprise. Irv shoots the beggar and flees with Vera without the money. Vera hides the gun and gives Irv an alibi.

Chuck and Georgia only implement their plan after the murder, they steal $ 600 without discovering the body. Vera then tries to blackmail Chuck and Georgia, for $ 2,000 in hush money she would not inform the police. When Chuck is suspected of murder, Hannah ensnares Irv to learn the truth. Thereupon the jealous Vera revokes your statement to the police and incriminates Irv.

The situation finally escalates in a former brewery, only the timely arrival of the police prevents Irv from strangling Vera in anger. The boy escapes, followed by Chuck, he falls from an upper corridor in the old factory and dies from being electrocuted by a high-voltage line. Chuck only receives a suspended sentence after returning the stolen money. The family finally manages to move from the ghetto to Astoria.
