history

Mineral Point got its name from the first settlers who came to the region of today's town because of the so-called mineral or lead rush (in German: “ lead rush ”). The point east of today's location and where lead was first found became the Mineral Point . Permanent settlement can be said to have existed since 1827. In 1829 Mineral Point became the county seat of the newly formed Iowa County. Because of the lead supplies, entire immigrant families from England (especially Cornwall ), Ireland and Germany first poured into Mineralpoint . This development changed when the California gold rush in 1848 pulled miners west to dig for gold. Another immigration boom developed with the discovery that zinc carbonate , which until then had only been considered a worthless by-product of lead extraction, contained a lot of metallic zinc . The Mineral Point Railroad , which was used from 1857 to bring in zinc ore used for zinc oxide production, also boosted trade in Mineral Point. In 1870 the place reached its highest population with 3,275. In 1882 the Mineral Point Zinc Co. was founded, and by 1892 it was the largest zinc oxide factory in the United States. The last zinc mine closed in 1979, and so did Mineral Point Zinc Co. In the meantime, agriculture and tourism have become major economic drivers. The mining past is still reflected today in the style of the preserved buildings. As a result, Mineral Point became the first Wisconsin site to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Others

Mineral Point is twinned with Redruth in Cornwall.
