Wisconsin Highways 13 , 34 , 54 and 73 run through the city . Wisconsin Highway 66 begins on the northern edge of the city and Interstate 39 and US Highway 51 run on the same route 20 km east .
The city is connected to the Canadian National route network.
The Central Wisconsin Airport is located 50 kilometers north of the city.
history
The Anishinabe called the area "Ad-dah-wah-gam" ("two-sided rapids") because the rapids in the river were divided by a large rock formation. Although the Europeans began to colonize the area as early as 1830, the name " Wisconsin Rapids " has only been in use since the 1920s. Before there were two parishes, " Centralia " and " Grand Rapids ", separated by the Wisconsin River . In 1900 these communities united to form the city of Grand Rapids . The city was renamed Wisconsin Rapids in 1920 because mail and goods deliveries were very often confused with the most famous place Grand Rapids in the state of Michigan.
