Bonnie Bartlett (born June 20, 1929 in Wisconsin Rapids , Wisconsin ) is an American actress .

Life

Bartlett's father was an unsuccessful actor who worked as an insurance salesman. Barlett grew up in Moline, Illinois , and studied drama at Northwestern University and later with Lee Strasberg . From 1955 to 1959, the young actress took part in the television series Love of Life , a TV soap that is very popular in America, where she played its heroine Vanessa Dale.

In the 1960s and 1970s, she focused on her motherhood role and performed less. In 1974 she returned to the screen and played the role of Grace Snider-Edwards in the family series Our Little Farm until 1977. This was followed by her role as Ellen Craig in the hospital series Chief Physician Dr. Westphall ( St. Elsewhere ), for which Bartlett received an Emmy Award in 1986 and 1987 . Ellen was the wife of surgeon Dr. Mark Craig, who was played by Bartlett's husband, William Daniels .

In the 1988 film, Twins , she played the mother of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito . In 1993 she had a role as the Senator in the movie Dave , in which Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver played the lead roles.

Bartlett has been married to William Daniels since 1951, whom she already met at Northwestern University in Chicago . One of the couple's children, born in 1961, died just a few hours after the birth. The actor couple adopted two boys, Michael and Robert; Bartlett then put her career on hold for over ten years to look after the sons. Both sons are now artistically active.
