occupation

Under the California Sun (original title: Knots Landing ) is an American television series and an offshoot of the successful television series " Dallas ". It played in the fictional California town of Knots Landing . Between 1979 and 1993 a total of 344 episodes of the series were broadcast.

Broadcast in Germany

A total of 344 episodes were shot , of which only 332 were dubbed in Germany . Episodes from the first four seasons are missing in Germany.

The ZDF had only started in January 1988 to show the series, which was very successful in the USA, in the evening program. In January 1991, the series switched to the private broadcaster Sat.1 after the broadcaster, which would have liked to buy the series before it was broadcast on ZDF, outbid ZDF's offer for the new episodes. Sat.1 broadcast the remaining episodes from January 1991 to August 1995. After the private broadcaster ProSieben broadcast the series as a repeat from December 1996 to January 1997 and canceled it again after the 29th episode, Unter der Sonne California was broadcast on various pay TV channels from 1998 to 2004 (including DF1, Premiere, Premiere series). For the first time, the station "Passion TV" showed the series in full from June 2009, including the previously suppressed episodes and the previously not broadcast sequel film "Back to the Cul-de-Sac" from 1997.

In Germany, Unter der Sonne California enjoyed great popularity and achieved high ratings for an early-evening series when it was first broadcast on ZDF. Overall, it was not as successful as the series of a similar format (Dallas, Denver-Clan), but was able to establish itself on the market for a longer time.

action

While the lives of the rest of the fictional Ewing family were portrayed in "Dallas", the middle of the Ewing brothers, Gary, and his wife Valene played the leading roles in "Under the California Sun" . Gary fell out with his family, especially his older brother JR and father Jock. So he moved to Knots Landing with his wife Valene in 1979. This town is a typical small American town with upper middle class citizens. The series characters are all neighbors in the first few seasons and live on a street that ends as a dead end with a turning loop for cars.

In the first four seasons, the series' stories revolved around the everyday problems faced by these residents, with Gary, Valene, Sid and Karen as the main characters. During this time, "Under the California Sun" was repeatedly associated with the mother series "Dallas". Many stars from the other series visited “Knots Landing” again and again. Gary's older brother JR ( Larry Hagman ) in particular had guest appearances from time to time.

In the fourth season, the producers created the character of the series rock singer Ciji Dunne ( Lisa Hartman ), whose murder towards the end of the season brought many members of the Knots Landing community under suspicion and for the first time related all characters in the series with the help of a storyline . Since the actress Lisa Hartman got an unexpectedly large number of fans through her Ciji interpretation and thus caused a sharp increase in the ratings , it was decided to bring her back to the series: This time as the Ciji doppelganger Cathy Geary, who was also the rock singer of the 1980s Years to the best. According to producer David Jacobs, this appealed to a younger target audience.

From season 5, the style of the series changed: the entry of the character Gregory Sumner ( William Devane ), who ran for the American Senate , brought suspense and a touch of mystery into the series, because Sumner collaborated with opaque conspirators and Government officials who even planned an international wiretapping system in season 6. Crime elements were also processed; it was about environmental pollution , drug problems , conspiracies at the highest level of government, violence in marriage, religious delusions or even violation of the Hippocratic oath by doctors.

After the series has ended

After 14 years the series was discontinued because the production had become too expensive for the station. In addition, many of the main actors did not want to continue playing their characters.

Shortly before the end of the series, the special The Block Party was created in 1993 , a souvenir show with interviews with the actors who essentially shaped the storyline of the series. In 1997, the two-part Reunion Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac was filmed in the USA . On July 29, 2001, the German dubbed version was shown on ORF 2 . The German premiere took place under the title Unter der Sonne Kaliforniens - Nobody Can Separate Good Neighbors from October 27 to November 6, 2010 in four parts on the Passion station . The content of the plot was continued here in the fictional community Knots Landing by the main characters around Abby, Greg, Karen, Mack, Gary and Val. The special Knots Landing: Together Again aired on December 2, 2005 in the United States and reunited many of the actors of the time in front of the camera. This was primarily about the exchange of various memories and personal references of the actors to the series: thoughts on the storylines or the work with each other, as well as in front of and behind the series scenes. Memory sequences of incisive scenes of the respective actors and the appearance of Julie Harris as a surprise guest rounded off this reunion.

DVD publications

In March 2006 the first season of the series was released by Warner Bros. on DVD in the USA . In Germany, the first season was released on February 9, 2007 as a DVD box set with a total of 5 DVDs from Warner Bros. For the first time, German viewers can now enjoy the episodes that were suppressed in the first season. Season 2 was released on DVD in the USA on April 14, 2009, and on October 16, 2009 in Germany.

Who lived where

The main field of action of the series was the impasse in which the four families lived. The "Seaview Circle" with the fictional name is actually what is known as Crystalaire Place in Granada Hills , California , a small street in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Los Angeles 20 miles north of the Pacific Ocean . The opening titles of the pilot film as well as the first two seasons suggested that dead end through fictitious image processing in the immediate vicinity of the Pacific beach. During the entire course of the series, the following families lived in the houses on the cul-de-sac:
