Helen Elizabeth Hunt (born June 15, 1963 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actress . In 1998 she was awarded the Oscar for best actress for the role in Better It Isn't Possible. She made her debut as a film director with Then She Found Me in 2007.

Life

childhood

Her parents, the director Gordon Hunt (1929-2016) and his wife Jane, moved to New York in 1966, but only six years later they moved back to Los Angeles. Helen Hunt got her first role in the television film Pioneer Woman on the side of William Shatner . In the following years she was seen in various television productions.

First successes

The first major film role she had in 1985 in the teen comedy Girls Just Want to Have Fun on the side of Sarah Jessica Parker . This was followed by roles in Peggy Sue Married and Project X with Matthew Broderick in 1987 . In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hunt was again in front of the camera for several television productions.

She received top reviews for her portrayal in the film Waterdance (1992) around three paraplegics. Actually, she had not intend to act in television series, but the offer of Paul Reiser in the series, Mad About You (Mad About You) to assume the role of his wife, let them reconsider their position. Both were recognized as best leading actor at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes .

After this career peak, Hunt starred as Tom Hanks' friend in the movie Cast Away . Films like Dr. T and the Women alongside Richard Gere or with Mel Gibson in the film What Women Want . After 2001 turned The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (The Curse of the Jade Scorpion) , she joined in 2004, again as an actress in appearance. In 2005 she worked on the television production Empire Falls , where she starred alongside Ed Harris , Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright Penn . Other roles in various cinema productions followed.

Private

Helen Hunt was married to actor Hank Azaria from 1999 to 2000 . From 2001 to 2017 she was in a relationship with producer Matthew Carnahan (* 1961), with whom she has a daughter (* 2004).
