Nick Marshall lives as a chauvinist who does not have a long-term relationship with a woman. Now an unpleasant surprise awaits the divorced employee of the Sloane Curtis advertising agency in Chicago : Since the agency wants to target more female audiences, Darcy Maguire is hired as the new creative director . Nick is shocked because he was counting on his own promotion and has now lost to a woman of all people.

The boss, who appears very consistently and dominantly, presents her plan at the first meeting. She gives her employees a package with products made for women and asks for creative ideas. Nick then rehearses in his apartment to the music of Meredith Brooks ' Bitch a . a. Depilatory strips and tights off. When he falls into the bathtub with the hairdryer and receives an electric shock, he undergoes a strange transformation: The next morning, Nick realizes that he can hear the thoughts of women.

This new gift bothers him at first, but a marriage counselor advises him to view his ability as an opportunity - after all, he is now the only "woman who understands" worldwide. Nick is now enjoying success on all levels. He proves to be a caring father buying his daughter Alex a prom dress and impresses his lover Lola with his sexual prowess. But the most important thing for him is professional progress. He "overhears" Darcy and steals her ideas without her discovering him. In doing so, he helps his ailing agency to get a lucrative contract with Nike .

Then his boss Dan Wanamaker dismisses Darcy and promotes him to creative director. However, since Nick has now fallen in love with his competitor, he confesses to Dan that he stole Darcy's ideas and works to get Darcy back her post. When he tries to visit the office worker Erin to prevent her from allegedly attempting suicide, he gets caught in a storm and receives another electric shock, which makes him lose his special ability again. Nevertheless, he is able to comfort his daughter, who was betrayed by her boyfriend Cameron, successfully. Then he visits Darcy and confesses that he has taken advantage of her and that he loves her, and the two make up with a long kiss.
