Dr. T and the Women is a 2000 American comedy film . It was directed by Robert Altman , the screenplay was written by Anne Rapp , and the lead role was played by Richard Gere .

action

The gynecologist Dr. T has a busy practice in Dallas . The upper class women come to him for an examination by the charming, patient Dr. T often have to wait for hours. His zealous medical assistant Carolyn has her hands full, keeping his back free and ironing out the quirks of his patients.

The orderly life of Dr. T falls apart when his wife, Kate, is arrested for causing public nuisance for walking naked into a mall fountain. She is admitted to a psychiatric facility and subsequently loses contact with the real world. Their older daughter Dee Dee is now planning her wedding to Eli. Then the younger daughter Connie, an idiosyncratic conspiracy theorist, reveals to him that Dee Dee is actually a lesbian. She had an affair with fellow student Marilyn in high school and has now chosen her as her bridesmaid. Even his exhausting sister-in-law Peggy spares Dr. Don't mess with their problems. She has just left her husband and is now moving in with his three naughty daughters. To make matters worse, Carolyn throws herself at him because she is in love with him, but this is not mutual.

In order to compensate for the balancing act between professional and private obligations and difficulties, Dr. Don't go back to his golf club. Here he met the new golf instructor Bree, whose lightheartedness he felt attracted to and with whom he began an affair after a while.

When Dee Dee's wedding is about to take place, she lets her groom sit during the ceremony and professes her love for Marilyn. The two run away together, leaving the stunned wedding party behind. Meanwhile a storm has set in. Although it is pouring rain, Dr. T in the open convertible to Bree. He begs her to pack her things and spontaneously leave town with him to start over somewhere else. But Bree feels overwhelmed by her lover's exuberance and separates from him because she doesn't want to change her life. Dr. T gets into his convertible and drives through the storm without a destination. On the way he gets caught in a tornado that throws him into a village where a woman is expecting a child. Dr. T, who, unlike his car, survived the accident unharmed, helps with the birth of the child. When he sees that it is a boy, he is happy.

Rita Kempley criticized in the Washington Post of 13 October 2000, the performance of the actors and the " incoherent " ( " disjointed ") screenplay.

Michael Wilmington called the film in the Chicago Tribune as a " joy " ( " joy ") and compared it with previous Altman comedies such as The Player .

Robert Altman was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2000 . Richard Gere was nominated for the 2001 Golden Satellite Award . The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
