Shelley Long (born August 23, 1949 in Fort Wayne , Indiana ) is an American actress .

Life

Long became known for the role of the waitress Diane Chambers in the series Cheers , in which she was later replaced by Kirstie Alley . For this role, she received the Emmy in 1983 for Best Actress in a Comedy Series , from 1984 to 1986 she was nominated in the same category, in 1993 she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. In 1983 and 1985 it also won a Golden Globe . In 1984 she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in Triple Trouble . In 1996 she was nominated for an Emmy for Best Guest Actress for her appearance in Frasier .

She played the couple "Fielding" with Tom Hanks in the film Gift Is Still Too Expensive . Together with Bette Midler , Shelley Long starred in the crime comedy Nothing but Trouble with the guy . She had guest appearances in Sabrina - Totally Verhext! as a wicked witch (episode 2x16) and then to life and death in the series Boston Legal (episode 1x17). From 2009 to 2018 she played DeDe Pritchett in a recurring supporting role in the sitcom Modern Family .

In 1981 she married Bruce Tyson, with whom she had a daughter, who was born in 1985 and whom she has been divorced from in 2003.
