action

The film tells of an eventful Easter weekend in the small town of Holly Springs , Mississippi . Camille Dixon, an older bachelorette, is a director of the play Salome , adapted by her, to be performed in the Presbyterian community. Her younger sister Cora, who is dominated by her, stars in this play and is considered the mother of Emma, who has just returned to Holly Springs. While preparing for the performance, Camille discovers that her aunt "Cookie" Orcutt has committed suicide. In order not to bring the family honor into disrepute in public with this shocking suicide, she eats the suicide note and makes everything look like a break-in. That brings the police to Willis Richland, Cookie’s best friend, who came to see them after a pub the night before. The whole town knows Willis wasn't the culprit, but an out-of-town investigator isn't so sure. Willis is therefore arrested and placed in custody.

However, on Easter Sunday, the day of the theater premiere, Camille comes under suspicion, as she was seen by the neighbor boy removing the murder weapon. Since Camille has sworn her sister Cora not to let the suicide get to the public, Cora is no longer ready to dispel the suspicion of murder that weighs on her sister. As a result, she secretly takes revenge on her sister, whose daughter Emma she had to "adopt" in order to cover up her husband's affair with Camille. When Camille also learns that Willis, a black man , is the closest relative of Cookies, the deceased man Buck and has therefore been given the inheritance, a world collapses for her.

criticism

“Robert Altman's amusing social satire depicts the atmosphere and way of life of the American South in a loving and at the same time very precise way. The script, which has vivid characters and charming plot details, as well as the prominent cast ensemble also contribute to the success. "
