Woldemar von Biedermann

Gustav Woldemar Freiherr von Biedermann (born March 5, 1817 in Marienberg ; † February 6, 1903 in Dresden ) was a lawyer, literary historian and Goethe researcher . As a pseudonym he used the name Ottomar Föhrau.

origin

His parents were the lawyer and politician Gustav Heinrich Freiherr von Biedermann (1789–1862) and his wife Caroline Dorothea Tost (1787–1868).

Live and act

He studied in Leipzig and Heidelberg from 1836 to 1839, the law and entered after some time lawyer had been in 1845 in the Saxon government service. In 1849 he was employed by the railways as government commissioner at the board of directors of the Chemnitz-Riesaer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , in 1851 as railway director in Chemnitz, in 1858 in Leipzig; In 1869 he was appointed secret finance council and deputy general director of the royal Saxon state railways. His son Flodoard von Biedermann urged him to publish his collected notes on the conversations of Goethe. This work was published in 10 volumes from 1889 to 1896.

In addition to many partly poetic and partly technical writings, he published around 180 articles on Goethe literature and edited several volumes of the Weimar Sophienausgabe of Goethe's works, for which he received an honorary doctorate from the Philosophical Faculty of Leipzig University in 1865. Biedermann was also a co-founder of the Goethe Society , of which he was a long-time board member, and he was a member of the Dresden literary-artistic society of the "Fourteen", to which u. A. the literary scholars Hermann Hettner and Robert Prölß belonged.

Biedermann died in Dresden in 1903 and was buried in the Old Annenfriedhof . His grave was destroyed in 1945.

He married Antonie Henriette Leopoldine von Trützschler (* 13 August 1825, † 1908) on June 11, 1848 in Großpostwitz near Bautzen . The couple had 10 children including:
