Berlin International Film Festival 1999
The 49th Berlin International Film Festival took place from February 10th to 21st February 1999 instead.
The 1999 Berlinale took place for the last time in the festival center around Kurfürstendamm . The Zoo-Palast was the premiere cinema for the competition films for the last time . For the first time in the history of the festival, the Berlinale was opened by an incumbent Federal Chancellor . Gerhard Schröder came together with the new Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media Michael Naumann .

International jury
The president of this year's jury was the Spanish actress Ángela Molina . Under her leadership, the following jury members selected the winners: Ken Adam , Paulo Branco , Assi Dayan , Pierre-Henri Deleau , Katja von Garnier , Hellmuth Karasek , Jeroen Krabbé , Michelle Yeoh .

- Golden Bear : Terrence Malick received the Golden Bear this year for his film The Narrow Ridge .

Silver bears were awarded in the following categories:
- Best Director: Stephen Frears
- Best actress: Juliane Köhler and Maria Schrader for their joint performance in Aimée and Jaguar
- Best actor: Michael Gwisdek for his work in the film Nachtgestalten
- Special jury prize: for the Danish director Søren Kragh-Jacobsen
- For an extraordinary individual artistic achievement: Tom Stoppard for the script for Shakespeare in Love
- For an exceptional artistic achievement: David Cronenberg
Panorama section
The film Solas by Benito Zambrano won the audience award. The film Raus aus Åmål (Fucking Åmål) by Lukas Moodysson received a " Teddy Award " . Other outstanding films in the 1999 panorama program: The War Zone by Tim Roth , Lola and Bilidikid by E. Kutluğ Ataman and Little Voice by Mark Herman .
Honorary Golden Bear
American actress Shirley MacLaine received an Honorary Golden Bear for her life's work . In her honor, the festival showed a retrospective of her best films.
