Stuart Peter Townsend (born December 15, 1972 in Howth , County Dublin ) is an Irish actor , film director , producer and screenwriter .

life and career

Stuart Townsend is the son of Peter, a professional golfer , and Lorna Townsend. Townsend studied acting at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin .

Townsend gained fame in the late 1990s with the British hit film Shooting Fish . Townsend was originally slated for the role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy , a film adaptation of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings . After test recordings, the role was reassigned. The official justification was that the producers thought Townsend was too young to play the role credibly. The role of Aragorn was taken over by fellow American actor Viggo Mortensen at short notice . In 2007 Townsend made his debut as a film director, screenwriter and producer with the film Battle in Seattle .

Townsend lived with fellow actress Charlize Theron from 2001 to 2009 . After nine years of relationship, Theron separated from Townsend on Christmas vacation in Mexico in 2009 . The two played together in 24 hours Angst , Head in the Clouds and Battle in Seattle .
