All About Adam (Original title: About Adam ) is a British-Irish comedy film with Kate Hudson and Stuart Townsend from 2000.

action

There is really no shortage of admirers for the pretty Lucy Owens. After all, the blonde waits in a trendy Dublin cafe and pampers the guests with velvety songs. But then Lucy sees her dream man: Adam is the name of the magnificent specimen, Lucy has his phone number within five minutes. When Adam meets Lucy's family for the first time, Lucy's mother Peggy immediately takes him to the heart, and Lucy's other two sisters, Laura and Alice, immediately take a liking to Adam, which Adam promptly takes advantage of by cheating on Lucy with Laura. Laura, who is currently working on her dissertation, screams during sex with Adam that women in the Victorian Age were stupid for living out their sexuality primarily in literature. She spontaneously changes the subject of her work and writes about sexuality in literature.

Lucy's eldest sister, Alice, is unhappily married because her husband Martin is more attached to the bottle than to her and their daughter. She is interested in Adam, but backs off at the last minute in an intimate situation. When Alice and Laura go shopping at a department store and Laura sees Adam, Alice tries to hide her excitement.

Lucy's brother David also succumbs to Adam's charm. When Adam tutors the perplexed David in relation to the seduction of his somewhat brittle friend Karen and the two young men share the same room in one night, Adam's proximity causes David to erect . While David is still worrying about his sexual orientation, Adam teaches Karen completely new erotic experiences, which David can subsequently benefit from.

A one-night stand occurs during a friendly meeting between Lucy and her former boyfriend Simon . Unsuspecting, Adam meets with Lucy, Alice, Laura and Peggy for dinner in the café where Lucy works. During this time Lucy performs a song and then proposes to Adam in front of the assembled audience. Adam is speechless at first because at that moment he was still turtling at the table with Laura, who is deeply shaken after Adam has said yes and breaks into tears. Alice notices all of this on the other side of the table, smiling, realizing that Adam has a liaison with Laura. Lucy has doubts on the day of the wedding. She tells her sisters that she betrayed Adam once. Alice says Lucy should keep this a secret because it can't be undone anyway. Then she asks Lucy with a grin if it was good - after Lucy says yes, Alice adds that it was worth it. Alice then drives expectantly to Adam, who then seduces her to have sex shortly before the wedding ceremony.

Lucy doubts again in front of the altar and makes a U-turn of the church. Adam runs after her, but is stopped by Lucy's mother Peggy, who asks him if he really wants to spend his future with Lucy. Adam chooses Lucy without hesitation. This is desperate and plagued with guilt. After telling Adam that she is hiding a secret from him, Adam admits that he also has some secrets from her and tells her that it is normal not to divulge them. Lucy is overjoyed after this conversation and decides to have the wedding.

In the end sequence, Alice, Lucy, Laura and Peggy gather next to Adam. Adam thanks and hearted all of them in a playful way by giving each of the women a kiss. In the end he looks gleefully into the camera and smiles. This can be interpreted to mean that he achieved his goal, namely to make the Owens family "happy" in one way or another.

Reviews

  • Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times that the sly romantic comedy had both wit and style .
  • Lisa Schwarzbaum wrote in Entertainment Weekly that the main character could be said to be open . Adam was open to Lucy's sisters, Laura and Alice, and created a life story for each of the women. The image shown of the city of Dublin is bright, it looks like another city on Schwarzbaum.
