Howth

Howth ([ h ə ʊ θ ]; Irish : Binn Éadair ) is a town in County Fingal in the Republic of Ireland with 8196 inhabitants (2006).

Howth is located a little east of Dublin , in the northern part of the Howth Head Peninsula , and is connected to nearby Sutton by an isthmus . In the past, the Howth Peninsula was occasionally separated from the mainland by storm surges and high tides . Howth used to be a small fishing village, today it is one of the terminus of the suburban rail network of the DART .

To the north, near the coast, is a small island called Ireland's Eye . It is currently a designated bird sanctuary, which is approached by tourist boats.

Howth is a popular destination for Dubliners and many tourists because of its harbor with numerous fish restaurants and fish shops and because of the cliffs with hiking trails. Howth is also popular with anglers as many types of fish can be caught on the rocky coast. The opportunity to see a wide variety of bird species also attracts bird lovers.

On July 26, 1914, the yacht The Asgard, which was owned by Robert Erskine Childers , landed 1,500 rifles for the Irish Volunteers near Howth. The event went down in history as Howth Gun Running . Two of the better known residents are Irish presenter Gay Byrne and Irish musician Barney McKenna , who died in 2012.

Aideen's Grave (or Finn mac Cools Quoit ) is the name of an ancient portal tomb on Howth Head.

In the Ulster Cycle of Irish Mythology , Howth is the scene of the "Battle of Étar" ( Cath Étair ).
