Salem is an American television series with a historical background and lots of fictional elements, developed by screenwriters Brannon Braga and Adam Simon. The series takes place at the time of the witch hunts during the 17th century and belongs mainly to the drama genre, but contains elements of mystery and horror.
In the main roles are u. a. Seen Janet Montgomery and Shane West . The series premiered on April 20, 2014 on WGN America. After only three broadcast episodes, the series was extended by a second season on May 5, 2014. The extension to a third season, which was broadcast in 2016, took place in July 2015. On December 13, 2016 it was announced that WGN will cancel the series after the third season; the last episode aired on January 25, 2017.

At the center of the plot is Mary Sibley, a beautiful, ruthless, yet very vulnerable, powerful witch who is married to a member of the Salem City Council. Her witch power only grew in the last few years, when her childhood sweetheart John Alden fought in the war against the French and the natives. When he returns to Salem, old feelings are evoked in Mary. Alden's old friend Cotton Mather , a local clergyman, is currently searching for witches, but this is growing into hysteria.
season 1
John Alden goes to war without knowing that he has impregnated his beloved Mary. When she found out about her pregnancy, John was long gone. Surrounded by devout Puritans , she aborts the child. Cotton Mather fears more and more that the city will no longer be free from witchcraft . Aware that many innocent people gave their lives in the process. John, returning to Salem, receives an unexpected visit from Mary. Again an innocent woman is accused of witchcraft while the actual witches watch as she is sentenced to death. Magistrate John Hale learns that someone observed the secret witch rite. That someone is Isaac Walton. The solution to choose him as the next victim fails because Mary knows and values him from before. Reverend Lewis tries a prohibited exorcism on his own daughter. Mary takes drastic measures. Her position as leader of the witches is in danger of being lost. John Hale and Rose are warned that John and Mary are dangerous. John Alden and Cotton Mather manage to capture the witch Rose. In the coming night, the planets should be in a special constellation, this should mean that witches in a certain place cannot tell lies. Mary tries everything to get back to power with the witches, while Tituba searches for the artifact that John Alden has hidden. With dark magic she sends Mary into the dreams of her former lover, which has consequences. Cotton's father, Increase Mather , shows up in Salem. A notorious witch hunter and manages to uncover a member of the circle. Mary worries if Increase will notice anything about her husband George Sibley, whom she has banned to gain power. Mercy, the Reverend's daughter, is now a witch too, and she and Tituba vie for Mary's attention. In a self-made torture chamber, Increase interrogates Tituba, against the objections of Mary and his son. John Alden is accused of witchcraft and Mary tries everything to avoid a lawsuit. Mary can no longer keep her secret from John and he learns that she is a witch. However, this cannot diminish his love for her and he convinces her to leave Salem together.

The plague strikes Salem . Tituba and Mary clash because Mary wants to spend the precious time with her newly returned son. Mercy gathers supporters and is confronted by Mary. Anne Hale, the daughter of John Hale, has to learn that she is also a witch and is given the task of controlling her strength. In Boston , Cotton Mather has to explain his failure at Salem. Mary tries to turn the citizens of Salem against their former protégé Mercy and their wanton witches. At the same time, she hopes to be able to do her job so that she can finally be reunited with her son, who is beginning to show another, unsettling side of his nature. Anne Hale - ripe with her new and uncontrollable powers - embarks on an unforeseen journey. Salem continues to try to fight the plague, but the townspeople are terrified. Mary tries to keep control of the city. John Alden returns to Salem. Despite Tituba's warnings, Mary Anne Hale begins teaching the art of witchcraft. John Alden continues to make his presence felt in Salem, and his actions have an impact on him and others, both politically and physically. Mercy continues to pursue her plans for revenge against Mary. Following Mary's public chastisement, the recently appointed magistrate Hathorne continues his attempt to enforce power over the citizens of Salem. Meanwhile, while John Alden continues his quest, his quest for answers yields valuable results, and Mary leads the fight straight to her newest enemies. The Countess Marburg comes to Salem and brings gifts for the citizens and advice for Mary. The battle that ensues leads to an outcome that could either support or hinder Mary's plans. Mercy encounters a potential new ally and Mary seeks help from an unexpected source. Mary resorts to drastic measures to obtain valuable information to help fight the Countess. As the Countess and her son Sebastian pursue their plan, they are afforded a rare glimpse into their enemy's fortress, where a fascinating introduction is made and their cause is strengthened by a new but unpredictable ally. Meanwhile, Tituba makes plans for her recently caught prey, and Cotton receives a surprise visit. Both Anne and Cotton receive unexpected late night visits, each of which leads to very different conclusions. As Mary tries to develop a relationship with her son, she and Tituba discover that the seemingly frightened and vulnerable little boy has troubling thoughts and preferences, perhaps even darker secrets. Tituba tries to make a deal with the prisoner John Alden. As the comet approaches earth and heralds the climax of the witches' sinister plan, the Countess Marburg makes a long-awaited acquaintance with a person who plays a key role in her and the cause of others. While Mary is ready to strike against the Countess, she receives news that shakes her to the core. Meanwhile, Anne continues to gather knowledge from her late father's writings and a protracted feud reaches a turning point and culminates in a surprising and potentially groundbreaking revelation. While the Countess Marburg prepares for the imminent arrival of the "Star Messenger" and her lover, the Dark Lord, Mary makes one last desperate attempt to thwart the Eternal Witch's plans, but her success or failure is in the hands of others. As John and Cotton continue with their monumental and unfamiliar assignment, each must process new information and gather strength to support them in what lies ahead. As the comet draws nearer, John Alden fights for his life while Anne Hale strives to protect someone whose life or death has great consequences for witches and mortals. Mary, noticeably affected by recent events, finds herself in a completely unfamiliar situation, which leads her to try a risky move. With her apparently completed mission, the Countess Marburg seems to indulge in the apparent completion of her plans without suspecting that the object of her devotion has desires that may be in direct contradiction to hers. Emotionally exhausted by recent events, anything but defeated Mary makes one last attempt against the Countess.

The devil has arrived in Salem and only one woman could stop him, his mother Mary. But the mighty witch seems to be dead.

Relation to real people and events
In terms of time and theme, the series relates strongly to the Salem witch trials in the 17th century and, with some main and secondary characters, also to real people who were involved in the cases. Seaman John Alden, clergymen Cotton Mather and John Hale, as well as Plaintiff Mercy Lewis and Defendant Tituba are personified in the series and used with fictional storylines.
