Bibala is a small town and county in Angola . Until 1975 the place was called Vila Arriaga .

history

The village was created under Portuguese colonial administration with the arrival of the Namibian Railway on February 1, 1912, under the name Arriaga , after the Portuguese President Manuel José de Arriaga (1841-1917). Residential houses for the employees were built here, and from then on the settling families practiced agriculture and cattle breeding. The place became a separate municipality on June 21, 1918. When it was raised to a small town ( Vila ) on December 13, 1965, the place also became the seat of its own district. After Angola's independence in 1975, the Portuguese place name Vila Arriaga was replaced by the current name.

administration

Bibala is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Namibe . The district has around 50,000 inhabitants (2014 estimate). From now on, the 2014 census should provide reliable population data.

The district is made up of four municipalities (Comunas):

The most important localities besides the parish seats include Vitchapitchapi, Fito, Pupa-1 and Mungondue.

Economy and Transport

The district is dominated by agriculture. Bibala is one of the most important production areas in the country, particularly in the cultivation of maize and millet . Cattle breeding should also be mentioned. The expansion and asphalting of the connecting roads in the district are intended to stimulate economic activity in the future.

Bibala is a stop on the Namibebahn . In the course of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002) the railway connection was set. After the gradual commissioning from 2010, President José Eduardo dos Santos inaugurated the entire route on August 25, 2012, with the arrival of the renewed railway line at its end point in Menongue . In addition, a number of stations along the route were built or extensively renovated by 2013. Bibala also received a new train station.
