Virei is a small town and county in Angola . The district is known for its prehistoric rock paintings , especially those of Tchitundo-Hulo. The ethnic groups and their various customs are also known, especially the Herero people of the Kuval / Mucubal .

Virei is the seat of a district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Namibe . The district covers 15,114 km² and has 38,538 inhabitants (2019 estimate) The 2014 census showed 32,445 inhabitants.

The district is made up of two communities (Comunas):

The most important localities besides the municipal seats include Kavelokamue, Tchacuto, Mukhanca, Tchikueia and Sayona / Saiona.

economy

The most important economic sectors in the district are agriculture and livestock. The arable land is further enlarged by clearing mines and clearing. In addition, state subsidies such as the allocation of seeds and agricultural equipment ensure an increase in production to combat hunger and poverty. The main crops are corn , tomatoes , sweet potatoes and cassava .

The formerly important quarrying of granite and marble in the Virei district, especially near Sayona, is to be reactivated and to provide economic impetus.
