description

Seedling of Agathis lanceolata

Agathis lanceolata grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 40 meters. The irregularly shaped crown is formed by dense, ascending branches. The trunk can be unbeaten up to a height of 15 meters above the ground. The branches are in quads of four . The finely-scaled trunk bark is colored red-brown.

The spherical buds are 4 to 8 millimeters thick and consist of numerous scales. Young leaves stand on a short petiole and are about 9 centimeters long and 3.5 centimeters wide and tapered. Older leaves are lanceolate to elliptical in shape with a length of 6 to 8 centimeters and a width of 1.6 to 2 centimeters. The leaf margins are bent back and the end of the leaf is pointed. The upper side of the leaf is dark green and the underside of the leaf is not blue-green in color.

The male cones are in opposite pairs in the leaf axes. They have a stem 0.2 to 0.4 centimeters long and are cylindrical in shape with a length of 1.3 to 2.3 centimeters and a thickness of 0.7 to 1 centimeter. The elliptical to spherical female cones are about 12 centimeters long and around 10 centimeters thick. They consist of broad, rounded cone scales. The egg-shaped seeds are 1.2 to 1.5 inches long and about 0.7 inches wide. They have two wings about 2 centimeters long and 1.3 centimeters wide.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Agathis lanceolata is on the New Caledonia archipelago . The main distribution area is in the southern province of the main island Grande Terre . Other deposits are in the northern province belonging Massif de Boulinda , Massif Mé Maoya and Col Maré .

The species thrives at altitudes of 200 to 1100 meters. It grows in dense rainforests on soils that have developed on ultramafitit .

Agathis lanceolata is classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The main reasons given are overuse and the fragmentation of the stands due to forest fires and clearing. Although there are now plantings, there is always illegal logging of the species. The total population is considered to be declining and is estimated to be less than 10,000 fully grown trees. None of the existing stands includes more than 1000 individual trees.

Agathis lanceolata is assigned to the Agathis section within the genus of the Kauri trees ( Agathis ) .

The first description as Dammara lanceolata was in 1862 by Eugène Vieillard in Notes Bois Nouv. Caledonie , page 169. Otto Warburg transferred the species in 1900 as Agathis lanceolata in Monsunia, Contributions to the knowledge of the vegetation of the South and East Asian monsoon area , Volume 1, page 186 into the genus Agathis . Synonyms for Agathis lanceolata Warb. are Dammara ovata C.Moore ex Seem. and Salisburyodendron lanceolata A.V. Bobrov & Melikyan .
