The Coniferopsida are a class of seed plants . These include the recent conifers and their closely related, but extinct Voltcials . Due to molecular genetic characteristics, the Gnetales are now often placed in this group.
features
The conifers and the Gnetales are morphologically so different that the group has practically no common characteristics.
Systematics
Two recent and one extinct order belong to the class Coniferopsida:
- Conifers (Coniferales)
- Gnetales
- Voltziales , the extinct presumed ancestor of the conifers
The position of the Gnetales within the Coniferopsida is supported by many molecular genetic studies. However, some show them as sister groups to all other recent seed plants. However, cladistic analyzes that include fossil seed plants see them in a clade together with the Bedecktsamern and Bennettitales .
