The Streptophyta are a group of photosynthetically active, multicellular eukaryotes , i.e. living beings with cell nuclei . The group consists of chandelier algae and land plants (Embryophyta).
features
All characteristics of the Charophyta also apply to the Streptophyta . Cell division here generally takes place via a phragmoplast . The cellulose is synthesized from rosette-shaped enzyme complexes . All species are multicellular, vegetative growth occurs with an apical cell (s) at the end of the side branches or the main axis. Sexual reproduction occurs through oogamy , with the egg cells being protected in a shell. The spermatozoids are mostly twisted. In the case of derived forms, this characteristic recedes: cycads and ginkgo have spermatozoids with a twisted flagella band, the other seed plants have uncultivated and non-twisted sperm. The cell divisions take place in all three spatial levels.
Systematics
In recent years, candelabrum algae have clearly emerged as the sister group of plants. Therefore, these two groups are combined within the Charophyta as a separate Streptophyta group. According to Adl u. a. In 2005 the taxa are not assigned any ranks:
- Chandelier algae (Charales)
- Plants (Plantae) = land plants (Embryophyta)
