The Archaeplastida are a taxon that is placed as a super-group to the Diaphoretickes , a clade of the eukaryotes (organisms with a cell nucleus ). They include the Glaucophyta , the Rhodophyceae ( red algae ) and the Chloroplastida with the Embryophyta (land plants).
features
The archaeplastida have photosynthetically active plastids with chlorophyll a as the main pigment. The plastids come from a primary endosymbiosis with a cyanobacterium . In some groups the plastids may be lost or reduced as a secondary cause. They usually have a cell wall made of cellulose . The cristae of the mitochondria are flat. Starch serves as a storage carbohydrate .
Systematics
The group was described in 2005 by a group around Sina Adl . The Archaeplastida are the sister taxon of the Sar , together with it they form the Diaphoretickes . The archaeplastida are divided into three groups:
- Glaucophyta
- Red algae (Rhodophyceae)

- Embryophyta (land plants)
In 2019 a fourth base group was discovered - the Rhodelphidia . Both described species are unicellular, flagellated predators that have lost the ability to photosynthesize .
