Pediastrum duplex is a green alga from the class Chlorophyceae . It wasfirst describedby Meyen in 1829and is the type species of the genus Pediastrum . The species occurs in plankton in all freshwater water types.

Pediastrum duplex

Its colonies, which consist of 8 to 32 cells, are shaped like an openwork toothed wheel. The size is very variable; cells range from 4 to 80 micrometers, and colonies from 30 to 300 micrometers. There are large spaces between the central cells. The marginal cells are only fused at the base and cut out deeply. Your two lobes extend into very diverse processes. The cell membrane is either smooth, punctured or has reticulated ridges.
