history

The city was named after the Portuguese explorer Alexandre Alberto da Rocha de Serpa Pinto (1846–1900), who explored southern Africa in the second half of the 19th century. Several striking buildings from Portuguese colonial history (until 1975) have been preserved, including the town hall ( Edifício dos Paços do Concelho de Serpa Pinto ), which was built between 1940 and 1955 , the governor's palace from the 1960s ( Palácio do Governador de Serpa Pinto ), and the administration of what was then the Menongue district ( Palácio do Governo do Distrito de Menongue ), established between 1930 and 1955 .

After Angola's independence in 1975, the place was given its current name Menongue. The name previously referred to the district (from 1975: province), which had its seat in Serpa Pinto. On October 21, 1961, it was raised to the city category. At that time it only had 30,000 inhabitants.
