history

In early 1988 military operations occurred at Cuito Cuanavale, which ended on March 23, 1988 and which became known as the "Battle of Cuito Cuanavale". The Angolan MPLA - Government troops met here with Cuban assistance to the UNITA -Rebellentruppen with the military support of the SADF . It is counted among the decisive battles of the Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) and is also seen as one of the milestones to end apartheid in South Africa . Cuban Ambassador to Angola, Gisela Garcia Rivera , visited Cuito Cuanavale in February 2013, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the battle. She invited Cubans and visitors from all over the world to see the monument, which was erected together with a large visitor center to commemorate the battle. In 2014, the battle was commemorated with a music festival, at which numerous Angolan pop musicians presented themselves to hundreds of dancing spectators on a festival site near the airport. In 2017, Cuito Cuanavale was entered in Angola's tentative list as a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage with the designation "Place of Liberation and Independence" .
